I just finished reviewing the V2 of the CMSWatch Portals Report, and heartily recommend it to anyone considering implementing a portal in their organisation.
It takes you through the basic concepts of what a portal is, is not, and might be!
Seriously, the concept of what a portal is and can do depends on what you want and what you buy.
Does it include CMS? Is it complementary to CMS. What about Search? Is it included or not?
How do portals relate to process management, to business intelligence, ...?
If you're a non-techie this report will give you the basics, enabling you to have meaningful conversations with your IT partners.
If you are from IT, it will give you a sense of the overall perspective and valuable detailed product evaluations.
You need to purchase the report - but it is well worth it and may well save you many times the cost of the report by helping you realise the different dimensions of cost and effort required to implement a portal successfully.
I know both Janus Boye, author of the report, and Tony Byrne, owner of CMSWatch (vendor independant analyst) and publisher of the report personally. I recommend their work highly.
They are very open to any comments you might have as users of portal products. All feedback to them is confidential and highly valued.
